Primary Function:
Duties of a Rig Welder will include but not limited to: Safety, quality and performing skilled work in the areas of welding and pipefitting. The team member has to be goal orientated, self-motivated and responsible for the appearance of themselves and their job site.
The Rig Welder will work close with other team members, with the goal of obtaining sufficient knowledge and experience en route to becoming a Supervisor. XL Industrial is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment. As such, all team members will be required from time to time to perform other duties that they are qualified to perform, outside of this job description and their normal work function.
He or she will assist all crafts in all assigned tasks. A team member shall work as a Rig Welder until such time has occurred that the necessary knowledge and experience (documented) have been met to enable the Rig Welder to advance (by testing and certification) to the position of Supervisor.
Work Environment:
The normal work environment will be in an industrial facility where exposure to outdoor weather conditions is imminent and where proper PPE is required for a variety of potential hazards.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The roles and responsibilities of a Rig Welder may include but are not limited to the following items.
- Meets the roles and responsibilities of a Rig Welder
- Must comply with XL Industrial’s Rig Welder agreement in its entirety and meet the requirements within the agreement regarding equipment and supplies and maintain an inventory of tools/equipment provided on his/her welding rig, prior to start and completion of project.
- Strong working knowledge and skills in the area of pipefitting and mechanical work
- Insure proper permits have been obtained, prior to execution of work
- Provide leadership, guidance and knowledge to team members in lower classifications
- Complete assigned tasks with safety and quality in a timely manner
- Housekeeping of job site
- Ensures that all welding rod is stored and controlled per XL Industrial’s procedures regarding welding rod storage
- Work within XL Industrial and client policies and procedures
- Isolation of equipment (blinding, LOTO, etc.)
- Demonstrates proper use and care of tools and equipment
- Completion of JSA’s
- Fully participate in the health, safety, quality and environmental processes
- Is an ambassador for XL Industrial to the client, other contractors and the public
Qualification Guidelines:
Experience:
- Minimum of three years of experience in industrial facilities or related fields
Skills:
- Ability to perform 100% x-ray welding in all types of positions and on all materials they are qualified to weld
- Read and understand pipe and steel drawings
- Ability to draw isometric drawings from plan drawings
- Advanced knowledge of pipefitting take-offs and verify field pipe dimensions
- Assist welders (grinding and fit up of pipe)
- Proper use of pipe beveling equipment
- Fabricate socket weld pipe fabrication
- Able to fabricate and install Stainless Steel Tubing and associated fittings
- Safe and proper use of rigging equipment
- Set up and connect welding leads and air hoses
- Proper set up and use of an oxygen-acetylene burning outfit
- Ability to operate man-lifts, skid steer loaders, scissors lifts, etc.
- Installation and removal of isolation devices (blinding, LOTO, etc.)
- Strong knowledge of pipefitting math
- Ability to perform Hot Taps
- Advanced hand and power tool knowledge
- Read and understand the use of permits, work authorizations, JSA’s, and associated procedures
- Ability to effectively receive and communicate verbal directions from supervisors, clients, managers, and other team members
- Complete appropriate XL Industrial skills assessment test(s)
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Able to attend continued training applicable to job as deemed necessary by XL Industrial
- Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification
- Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials)
Physical:
- Must comply with XL Industrial’s drug and alcohol policy
- Able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary as required by
XL Industrial
- Must be able to climb ladders and stairways
- Must be able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials
- Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces
- Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces. (dirt,
concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
- Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training. Knowledge of facility and chemical hazards which may require special precautions and PPE
- Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location
- CPR and 1st Aid Trained when required
- Must be able to pass OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course
- Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English
- Must be able to pass appropriate defensive driving course as required
