Position Overview:
The welder job is a highly skilled craftsman position that requires journeyman level skills and expertise in welding, pipe fitting, fabrication and general maintenance. Welders may have and use other skills such as plant operators, field machinists, or electricians. They are responsible for major maintenance on tanks and piping systems and for fabrication of pipe racks, equipment stands and other items necessary to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the plants. When welders are working from their home bases, they work with local operations managers to prioritize their work and they manage their own work schedule. When business levels are especially high, they may be asked to help with operational tasks in addition to their construction and maintenance tasks. When larger projects occur, the construction manager or construction supervisor will call for the welders to travel as needed to support the projects and will set their priorities and travel schedules. The welders will be assigned tasks and work independently from formal plans or from informal sketches or verbal requests. As jobs are finished the manager or supervisor will assess the project needs and reassign welders to new tasks. Specific welder responsibilities include:
- Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures.
- Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
- Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements).
- Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
- Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces.
- Weld components using manual welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead).
- Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps.
- Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
- Maintain operations process equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
- Maintain welding equipment, vehicle and necessary tools and supplies.
Welder’s report to the construction manager or the construction supervisor. When they are stationed at home, they work independently with general direction received by local operations management. They are responsible for maintaining their equipment and ordering supplies as necessary. When assignments are made, the welders work independently to accomplish the task and clean up the work area in preparation to resume operations.
