This position is located in the District of Columbia Government (District), Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS), Apparatus Division. The position functions as a welder, responsible for performing the full range of welding work processes, procedures, requirements, and assignments.
Duties and Responsibilities
Independently uses electric, acetylene, jigs, metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas, plastic, and/or gas shielded welding processes and soft and hard soldering processes. Work involves planning, laying out, and estimating material for ordering, positioning, and clamping work, preheating the metal, and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion. Uses templates, blueprints, sketches, drawings, work orders, or other specifications which indicate requirements to be met in repairing, modifying, and fabricating metal items for a variety of equipment in support of the department. Repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Makes a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding.
Works with light, heavy gauge, and hardened metals, such as steel, copper, aluminum, stainless, and sheet metal, in flat, vertical, horizontal, angled, circular, and overhead positions. Work processes include pre-heating, brazing, bead welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating; selection of the type of rod and size of tip required, determining heat necessary, setting up and adjusting equipment, maintaining proper speed, flame, motion, tip angle and position to produce desired results. Uses specialty devices and ensures that systems are properly purged before beginning the welding operation. Welds cracked frames and body parts and straighten parts by utilizing hydraulic jacks, air hammers, hand hammers 70-ton press, special tools, sheet metal brake, shear, and roller.

Working Conditions/Environment
The work is performed indoors and outdoors, sometimes in bad weather, in areas that may vary from "clean rooms" to areas that are noisy, dirty, and smokey. Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared, and ultraviolet radiation and heat, flying sparks, the glare of WELDER RW-3703-11 torches, and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and flash shield or eye goggles. Frequently exposed to acids, fluids, and lubricants which may prove irritating to the skin. Subject to discomfort caused by drafts, dust, heat, and fumes, while lying on hard floors or ground. Frequently exposed to noise from cutting and hammering operations. Tools, other than special tools related to this job must be supplied by the welder.

Subject to recall 24 hours 7 days per week.
The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of the DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability.
This position is designated as Essential pursuant to Chapter 12 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations, Hours of Work, Legal Holidays, and Leave.
Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
